The ANZAHPE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Subcommittee

The ANZAHPE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Subcommittee provides input on matters relating to DEI in ANZAHPE, both solicited and unsolicited, to promote accessible and equitable enactment of DEI principles and activities within the organization for the benefit of Health Professional Education and Educators and the broader community we seek to serve.

DAVID LIM

David's passion for equity and inclusion stemmed from the privilege of working with and serving different underserved (disadvantaged, marginalised, vulnerable) communities prior to entering academia. David has a specific interest in addressing the intersectionality affecting underserved communities with complex needs, and bring that 'fire' to his teaching and research.


sowbhagya micheal

Dr Sowbhagya Micheal is a Lecturer in Medical Education at the Western Sydney University School of Medicine and Convenor of the community-engaged Medicine in Context program. She combines her expertise in social work, public health and teaching to translate community voices and contexts into medical education. Her work focuses on Community Engaged Medical Education, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and improving community health, particularly of those who are underrepresented in healthcare. Sowbhagya also initiates and maintains partnerships community partnerships and has a keen interest in promoting equity and inclusive practices in higher education institutions.

Lichin Lim is a clinical educator who brings a deep passion for fostering collaboration and innovation in health professional education. With over 15 years of experience, she focuses on advancing interprofessional education, integrating the humanities in healthcare, and building the healthcare workforce capacity. Lichin is dedicated to creating meaningful, inclusive learning experiences that help health professionals work together more effectively and navigate today’s complex health systems. Her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) drives her to promote learning and working environments where individuals from all backgrounds feel valued and empowered to succeed.

Dr. Jain is a researcher, educator, and committed changemaker focused on justice, anti-ableism and critical disability studies in health professions education and research. In her current role, she teaches in clinical education and medical humanities. Among other research, she co-edited Equal Access for Students with Disabilities: The Guide for Health Science and Professional Education (2020) and co-authored the AAMC special report, Accessibility, Inclusion, and Action in Medical Education: Lived Experiences of Learners and Physicians with Disabilities (2018). Originally from the United States, she is now happily living and working in Aotearoa - New Zealand.

I am a registered occupational therapist with vast experience working with clients living with a disability and in community settings. I am also an educator and researcher, with a focus on the impact of culture in the provision of healthcare services and education, urban design, healthy ageing, intergenerational programs, and the use of arts and humanities in occupational therapy training. I maintain a global understanding of current issues in healthcare education due to my personal and professional trajectories, including degrees completion in Chile, Spain, Sweden, and Australia.

His extensive experience in promoting inclusive practices and addressing disparities in medical training aligns with UQ’s mission. Awais has demonstrated leadership in initiatives that empower underrepresented groups, fostering an environment of respect and collaboration. He aims to bring his ideas and dedication to improving health outcomes for diverse populations that will enhance the collective efforts of ANZAHPE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Subcommittee.



BRAHM MARJADI

Leading Community Engaged Learning at Western Sydney University School of Medicine since 2014, Brahm oversees, maintains and develops partnerships with 200+ community service organisations in teaching and learning, research and service. Brahm's Community Engaged Learning work led him to champion an Intersectionality approach in addressing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in medical education, the university, professional organisations and the community. Brahm has co-founded the Public Health Association of Australia’s DEI Special Interest Group and served as Inaugural Convenor (2019-2022) and co-founded the International Community of Practice (CoP) on DEI in Medical Education under the auspices of AMEE. Brahm's other DEI works range from raising awareness of perimenopause, to supporting refugee doctors’ integration to clinical practice in Australia.

Tammie st choi

Dr Tammie ST Choi is an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian (AdvAPD), a cross-cultural researcher and a senior lecturer at Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food, Monash University. Tammie's research focuses on optimising health education and behaviour change among Chinese Australians, and exploring culturally tailored learning support and employability capital development among international students. She has established the International Students Acculturation Program for nutrition and dietetics international students, which was recognised by the University Diversity and Inclusion Award in 2018 and the Faculty Dean’s Award for Excellence in Education in 2022.

I am Juan-Pablo (JP) Faundez-Astudillo, a clinical audiologist with an additional background in speech pathology and neuroscience. I was born and raised in Chile and moved to Australia to pursue a PhD at Macquarie University 6 years ago. I have held positions as a clinical educator, lecturer, and hearing researcher in Chile and Australia before landing at The University of Melbourne three months ago.

We continually encourage each other to explore our biases and assumptions and have been excited and pleased to work with ANZAHPE board and ANZAHPE members to make a difference in all aspects of health professional education.

Dr Pauline Wong is a Senior Lecturer in Nursing and serves as the Deputy Director of Education at Monash University Nursing and Midwifery. She also leads the Intensive Care Nursing stream in the postgraduate Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing program. Since 2022, Pauline has been an active member of the ANZAHPE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) sub-committee. With an extensive clinical background in ICU nursing, Pauline has held management and educational roles in major metropolitan healthcare settings prior to her academic career. As a health professions educator and a student from an ethnic background, she has firsthand experience of the inequities and discrimination faced by diverse student cohorts. This motivates her to advocate for and implement transformational changes in teaching practices that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Pauline's research primarily employs qualitative methodologies, including grounded theory and in-depth interviewing. She has also supervised numerous PhD, Masters, and Honours students.

Gisselle is a clinician, health educator and health services researcher with skills and experience in the evaluation of health policy, knowledge translation and the use of mixed methods in research. Her research and teaching focus on the experiences on the lived experience of people with disability, the experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse people, as well as the intersection of these.
