Tips for writing a high-quality research grant in Health Professions Education

Writing a competitive research grant is an essential skill for researchers and scholars in Health Professions Education. Our presenters, Megan Anakin, the current ANZAHPE Research and Scholarship Lead, with Betty Chan and Elizabeth Bourne, two of our 2024 Research Grant recipients, will outline some fundamental principles of successful research grant writing, utilising the ANZAHPE research grants scheme as a case study. Participants are encouraged to come to the online session, having read the ANZAHPE research grant guidelines and with a research grant idea in mind.
This networking event provides an exciting opportunity for our members. Come along and have a chat with our presenters as they provide some insightful hints and tips, and talk through their experiences!
OUR PRESENTERS
Dr Megan Anakin is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy Education within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Megan's research focuses on examining the experiences, influences, and impacts on students and teachers when learning/teaching decision-making about providing patient care in a range of contexts including simulation and interprofessional education; and how this knowledge can be used to inform curriculum and faculty development in health professions education. Megan is also exploring how Cultural Historical and Activity Theory can be used inform health professions education research and practice.
A/Prof Betty Chan is a clinical toxicologist and emergency physician with key interests in cardiovascular drug poisonings, antidotes, and cognitive function following poisoning. She is an Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales, where she heads the Discipline of Critical Care. She also serves as a consultant with the NSW Poisons Information Centre and is an Associate Editor of the journal Clinical Toxicology. Additionally, she leads the Clinical Toxicology Unit at Prince of Wales Hospital, as part of the South Eastern Area Toxicology Service (SEATS).
Her research has resulted in over 80 publications and has contributed to changes in clinical guidelines for the management of digoxin, methotrexate, lithium, tricyclic antidepressant, and dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker poisonings.
Dr Elizabeth Bourne is the Program Director, Master of Speech Language Pathology at The University of Sydney. She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and a national accreditor for Speech Pathology Australia. Dr Bourne informs her academic practice through researching the educational outcomes and experiences of healthcare students during placements, as well as their impact on their supervisors, patients/ clients, other team members and the wider healthcare sector. Dr Bourne is currently working on projects related to a successful ANZAHPE grant exploring the transfer of knowledge and skills in speech pathology students as well as three successful university Strategic Education and First Nations strategy grants, totalling $245K.
