UWA Medical School has recently undertaken a process of “curriculum queering”, to increase authentic LGBTIQA+ representation and diversity within the case-based learning curriculum. During this masterclass, we will introduce the process through which we engaged with community members to identify their expectations and needs, and developed curriculum to enhance the skills students need to engage with patients from the LGBTIQA+ community. This masterclass will support you to explore how to increase diversity and inclusive practice skills in your health professions curriculum, through the lens of case-based learning. ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS:
Dr Helen Wilcox
Dr Helen Wilcox (she/her) is Acting Dean of the Medical School at the University of Western Australia and is a highly experienced general practitioner, academic, teacher and leader. She works concurrently in clinical practice as a general practitioner with a special interest in doctors' health, and is an active academic, presenting extensively and publishing peer reviewed articles in high impact journals. Dr Wilcox led the design and development of the new MD 2021 program, and continues to direct curriculum development, evaluation and assessment, student-centered teaching, and digital learning. She has held a number of senior leadership positions in medical schools and specialty colleges nationally and internationally.
Dr Ness Vaughan
Dr Ness Vaughan (they/them) is Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia Medical School, and an experienced public health medicine educator. As a trans non-binary academic, their lived experience is inextricably linked to and informs their work, which focuses on the experiences of people with marginalised and often intersecting identities who experience increased barriers to safe, inclusive healthcare. As part of the Community Engagement Team and Medical Education Unit, Dr Vaughan works with community members and educators to create safer learning spaces, co-design learning activities with authentic representation of diversity, and amplify the voices of community members in health professions education. They are the Co-Convenor of the WA Curriculum Queering Community of Practice, and an active lived experience advocate.
