Congratulations to our newest Associate Fellow of ANZAHPE, Amanda Burdett.

After earning her degree in Exercise Physiology at UNSW, Amanda Burdett worked in the allied health industry as an Accredited Exercise Scientist and Physiologist, in athletes/sports, clinical services and business management roles across several businesses, including her own! After 5 years of doing that, Amanda took an opportunity to come full circle and return to UNSW to a professional role managing clinical placements for the very Exercise Physiology program she studied, before her passion teaching students within UNSW’s campus clinic saw her transition into an academic role. Amanda’s educational research has focused on the development of suitable assessment tools and marking rubrics to enhance both the student and assessor experience.

Hear from Sinead about her experience at the ANZAHPE conference and why she applied for a prize.

"As an early career researcher, I have often felt overwhelmed by the mountain I need to climb. However, ANZAHPE has been the comrade that has encouraged me to keep climbing one step at a time. Many of the members have been official and unofficial mentors and I attend the ongoing faculty development sessions. It was from one of these sessions that I was encouraged to apply for a student prize. My supervisors, ANZAHPE mentor (Anna Vnuk) and Megan Anakin all provided valuable feedback on my drafts. The conference afforded me an opportunity to present my work and attend many useful sessions. I particularly enjoy the workshops as they provide an opportunity to network with others.  I would encourage others to be brave, start climbing the mountain, reach out for support and even if you don't win the prize you will have improved your thinking and writing."

Congratulations to Professor Stephen Tobin on his appointment of ANZAHPE Fellow. 

About Professor Stephen Tobin

Stephen Tobin is Professor of Clinical Education and Associate Dean at the School of Medicine, Western Sydney University.

Over 20 years he moved from full time regional surgical practice to almost full time medical education. He holds GradCert in Clin Ed from UNSW and MSurgicalEd from University of Melbourne.

He has previously worked for the latter, plus Deakin University, University of Notre Dame Rural Clinical School and was Dean at RACS for over six years.

He received FRCS(Edin) ad hom in 2018 for service to surgery and surgical education.

Stephen is currently involved with EPAs as workplace-based assessments, professionalism for students and staff, e-portfolio and overall non-graded progressive assessment for medical students. These can be linked as clinical performance for safe high-quality patient care.

Becoming Fellow of ANZAHPE recognises this work and also becomes opportunity for more contribution to the Association. He is willing to be a mentor and currently mentors some of the WSU faculty.

Congratulations to Dr Priya Martin of The University of Queensland, one of the ANZAHPE early career prize winners (Supported by Richard Hays).

As a recipient of the 2022 ANZAHPE Early Career Health Professions Education Research Prize, I had the privilege to share about my post-doctoral research journey and it’s influence on policy, training, and practice, at the recent ANZAHPE conference. It was a great opportunity to share what I have been able to achieve and influence since receiving the ANZAHPE Post-registration Student Prize in 2017.

These prizes have given me a platform to represent those from diverse ethnic backgrounds, and those underrepresented including women in academia, those with caring responsibilities, or those based rurally. While these additional barriers cannot be underestimated, they can be navigated with support from the right mentors and collaborators, fuelled by your vision and passion to make a difference.

The beauty of ANZAHPE is the abundance of experienced, inclusive mentors that are devoted to nurturing the next generation. To pass this onwards, I mentor a number of students and junior researchers and ensure junior researcher representation on project teams where able. The ANZAHPE conference is a great opportunity to identify suitable mentors and collaborators, and to showcase your work and achievements that can inspire others. We all can play a part in embracing diversity and making research and the workplace more inclusive.

Congratulations to Dylan Mayer of UNSW, winner of the 2022 ANZAHPE Pre-registration Student Prize (Sponsored by Australian Medicines Handbook)

"It has been a privilege and honour to be a part of the 2022 ANZAHPE Conference, and to have been awarded this year’s Pre-Registration Student Prize for my submission ‘Tossing Away the Too Hard Basket: Faculty-Student Partnership in Advocacy, Design and Implementation of a Gendered Violence Curriculum in Medical School’. This work represents an 18 month long (and ongoing!) collaboration of faculty and students committed to integrating an interdisciplinary, intersectional and trauma-informed curriculum covering sexual assault, domestic and family violence across our six year degree.  

I would highly encourage all students to be a part of the unique opportunities ANZAHPE presents. As medical students, we are not often able to see ‘behind the curtain’ to appreciate the extraordinary innovation and passion that goes into our education.  

In the final year of my course, the ANZAHPE Conference presented a meaningful birds-eye perspective on the learning, and community, that defined the last six years of my life. The role models I have met within the UNSW Medical Faculty will stay with me as continued examples of who I hope to become during my career. Seeing this mirrored across Australia and New Zealand was truly inspiring, and I only wish I had have become involved sooner!"

About Tim Wilkinson

Tim Wilkinson is Professor in Medicine and medical education at the University of Otago, New Zealand.  He has a MClinEd, PhD and MD that are all in medical education. His research interests are assessment of clinical competence and performance, workplace learning, selection into medical school, career paths, and professionalism. He works as a consultant physician in geriatric medicine. 

A Fellowship of ANZAHPE signifies the value he places in ANZAHPE as a supportive community of health professional educators and his commitment to contribute back to that community. Tim continues to lead our Fellowship scheme, further signifying the importance this scheme plays in Tims life.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Simone Gibson who has had her ANZAHPE Fellowship revalidated for another 5 years. We are excited to retain Simone as one of our long standing Fellows.

About Associate Professor Simone Gibson

Associate Professor Simone Gibson, PhD, BSc, Grad Dip Diet, Grad Cert Health Prof Ed is the Director of Education for the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash University and leads postgraduate courses in health professions education. Her PhD focussed on integrating academic and clinical training resulted in new curriculum innovations resulting in enhanced student learning and workplace engagement. Simone is on the editorial board of Focus on Health Professional Education journal and presents and publishes in the areas of education and dietetics. Simone received the 2018 Australian Award for University Teaching in Biological Sciences and Health for teaching excellence and is committed to developing educational quality and innovation in the health professions.

"My scholarly interests include using design thinking in health, involving patients in student feedback processes, graduate employability, programmatic assessment and faculty development in clinical education. My methodologies are mostly qualitative, but I try to use mixed methods where I can (especially if I have access to a statistics expert!).

After seven years as an Associate Fellow of ANZAHPE and enjoying the networks I have made in the association, I decided to update to Fellow status to reflect my career developments achieved over this time. Being part of the ANZAHPE Fellowship scheme is valuable in highlighting my expertise in health professions education, especially as I my role has grown away from my former professional identity as a dietitian. As I lead postgraduate programs in health professions education, I would like to inspire clinicians to pursue careers in this area. Being an ANZAHPE Fellow adds to my credentials and enthusiasm to encourage others to join ANZAHPE and promote health professions education collaboration, scholarship and research."

About Emeritus Professor David Prideaux

Re-validation was never a question for me. I value my Fellowship just as I value my 31 years as a Member/Honorary Member of ANZAHPE. I joined ANZAME, as it was, in 1991 just as I was beginning my new career in medical education. I felt instantly at home and have done so ever since. ANZAME/ANZAHPE leaders and members have been great mentors to me in my career and I view the Fellowship as an opportunity to pay some of that back by mentoring others.

I was lucky enough to be able to serve ANZAME/ANZAHPE as Committee Member, Secretary, President and Journal Editor. My Fellowship enables me to continue to serve in another role. I have seen ANZAME/ANZAHPE grow from an organisation that promoted good ideas about teaching to one that is engaged in the scholarship of Health Professional Education. I look forward to contributing to that scholarship through my Fellowship. I am proud to be FANZAHPE.

David Prideaux is Emeritus Professor of Medical Education in the Prideaux Discipline of Clinical Education in the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University. He is an educator by background with expertise in curriculum development, assessment and evaluation. His roles have included curriculum design, assessment, evaluation and staff development for the medical course at Flinders. He has undertaken consultancies in the development and change of medical school programs nationally and internationally and has assisted with the development of new medical schools in Australia and overseas. Professor Prideaux’s research interests focus on curriculum models for sustainable and symbiotic clinical education. He has published widely his field of study and has been Deputy Editor of the journals Medical Education and Advances in Health Sciences Education. He has performed a number of roles in accreditation and assessment at the Australian Medical Council and is currently a Director and Chair of the Assessment Committee. He is the holder of the 2004 Australian and New Zealand Association for Medical Education (ANZAME) Award for Excellence in Medical Education and a 2010 Staff Award for Outstanding Contribution to Flinders University. In 2015 he was made a Foundation Fellow of ANZAHPE, the successor to ANZAME.

About Dr Svetlana King

I am a Senior Lecturer in Health Professions Education at Flinders University. In the medical program, I lead the research education curriculum and coordinate the Learning Coach program – an initiative where medical students work individually with a coach who supports their development as a self-regulated learner and reflective practitioner throughout the four-year program. In the Prideaux Discipline of Clinical Education, I teach in the Master of Clinical Education, supervise HDR students, and undertake my own HPE research. I have an eclectic array of research interests, much of which is closely aligned to my teaching. In particular, I am interested in coaching, self-regulated learning and reflective practice, and also undertake research in faculty development. I am also a member of the Learning and Teaching Academy leadership team and am involved in providing faculty development to staff who are undertaking educational scholarship.

As a former high school teacher and newcomer to HPE, I was apprehensive about attending my first ANZAHPE conference in 2014, and anticipated that I would feel like an outsider. But the sense of community was palpable and the ‘flat structure’ of the organisation was evident. I felt an immediate sense of belonging to the ANZAHPE community and this is something that I have really appreciated during my career in HPE. To be recognised as a Fellow of ANZAHPE is an incredible honour. It further strengthens and formally recognises my place in this community, and I hope that I can support others who are engaging in HPE research and scholarship to also feel part of this community.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Sub-committee

Over recent years, there has been a development in our understanding of what it means to be “other” and the significant impact that this has on health and wellbeing with, for instance, clear gaps in life expectancy between indigenous and non indigenous people in both Australia and New Zealand . As an Association for Health Professional Educators, it is important that we continually re-assess our role in helping to ensure diversity, inclusion and equity in health.

When looking at what we can do as an organisation, we need to ask ourselves:

• Does the membership and leadership of our organisation represent the diversity of our Australia and New Zealand? In particular, are first nations people represented in our organisation and our leadership?

• Are we as an organisation being inclusive? And are the voices of those with diverse attributes being heard?

One of the first ways that we can get an understanding about the diversity and inclusion of our organisation is to ask our members to fill in optional information about their personal attributes when renewing their membership. These attributes would be age, gender, sexual orientation, culture/ethnicity and disability. All of the data are kept secure and confidential under the ANZAHPE privacy policy (insert link – see below)). When we run data collection, we will not link personal attributes to names and when we report on our organisation’s diversity, we will use broad terms. For example, in the most recent censuses in Australia and New Zealand , approximately 200 ethnic groups were described but, as our organisation is relatively small, these will be narrowed down to nine broad groups in Australia and six broad groups in New Zealand so that if for example we were reporting on ethnic groups, we would report on South East Asian members rather than report on ethnic groups with only one member which could potentially allow that member to be identified.

We already have data on the health professions that are represented in our organisation, so that once we have a clearer understanding of the characteristics of the members of our organisation, we can direct our efforts to encourage membership, leadership and inclusion of the diverse communities present in our countries and our health professional educators.

This is the first step that we need to take as an organisation. The next step is to ensure that our organisation educates and empowers our members to lead and support change in their own institutions so that the composition of our student cohort and the content and process of our teaching reflects diversity, inclusion and equity, with the goal of improving the health of the communities that we serve.

We have a subcommittee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to help guide our policies, decisions and actions which meets via zoom for a short meeting every 1-2 months. We are looking for new members on our subcommittee and we would particularly welcome those from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
