Lisa is Dean and Head in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at La Trobe University. Her professional clinical background is both as a Registered Nurse and Midwife. Lisa has been Editor-in-Chief of Collegian: The Australian Journal for Practice, Scholarship and Research since 2014 and is an Editorial Advisor for Nurse Education Today. She has researched and published extensively in nursing, midwifery and health professions education with a particular focus on simulation and patient safety, peer-assisted learning, professional role development and work readiness. Lisa has also supervised many honours, masters and doctoral students undertaking related studies. She is regularly sought to share her expertise both nationally and internationally.

Lisa sees Fellowship of ANZAHPE as a natural extension to her work in the field and in growing the exposure of health professional education as an area of scholarly and research importance. Through her Fellowship, Lisa intends to continue to provide mentoring and leadership in health professional education to further grow the field.

I am a medical doctor, who has worked in both private and public sectors as a GP, Assistant General Surgeon, Anesthesiologist and Intensivist. My interests and ambitions in teaching health professionals piloted me to Australia where I furthered my education (Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education and PhD).

For almost two decades, I have extensively taught medical, nursing & midwifery, paramedicine, rehabilitation & science students and also made significant contributions to clinical workshops for trainee clinicians, paramedics, nurses from major Brisbane metropolitan hospitals and general community from high schools. Over the past five years, my primary focus is on developing and implementing innovative teaching methodologies for health professionals’ classrooms and designing better assessments. I furthered my research interests into interprofessional education (nursing) by introducing flipped classroom and simulated patient philosophy. I am currently developing virtual classrooms and novel teaching pedagogies for teaching medical/health students.

I have also reviewed healthcare curricula at both UQ and national universities by providing leadership and support in institutional and cross institutional committees. I have represented UQ on assessment consortia, for local students and internal medical graduates, both locally and overseas.

As an active member of ANZAHPE, I believe that the organisation has led by example in promoting and strongly supporting collegiality among health educators nationally and internationally. The organisation not only provides a fertile ground for individual health educators’ development but also nurtures educational research by creating avenues for collaboration and networking to further develop better health education. I am honoured to be accepted as an Associate Fellow. I am confident that I am ready to positively contribute towards ANZAHPE’s core objectives and strategic priorities.

Dr Coxon has a strong interest in medical education and has worked in undergraduate, provocation and postgraduate medical eduction.

The reason I applied for an Associate Fellowship of Health Professional Educators was to join a association of likeminded health educators. I am proud to receive associate fellowship which is recognition for my contribution to the world of medical education.

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a key theme in the upcoming ANZAHPE Festival so keep an eye out for the program, available soon on the Festival website

AIPPEN (Australasian Interprofessional Practice & Education Network) meets three times a year to focus on shared interprofessional priorities and issues. Despite the lack of face to face professional development opportunities, multiple international webinars on interprofessional topics are advertised on the AIPPEN Slack site. The steering committee have also commenced development of an AIPPEN guide and infographic for educators on 'How to facilitate a pre-registration interprofessional student group.' The purpose of this is to have a good concise reference for staff who want to come and help to facilitate IPL or for those staff who find this work within their role and don’t really understand the principles.

What to know more? Contact: aippen@anzahpe.org

Fiona Kent, AIPPEN Steering Committee Chair

ANZAHPE and AIPPEN have collaborated in the development of a web-based digital library to facilitate the sharing of IPE resources for the Australian and New Zealand contexts.  Hosted by Nexus, this repository provides peer reviewed resources including presentations, guidelines, reports, links to journal/conference papers and learning modules.

Click here to view the 25 resources currently in the repository

If you would like to submit a resource to the ANZAHPE Resource Repository please complete the submission form and email to executive@anzahpe.org

One of the issues the PD group has been grappling with is what constitutes PD.   Since COVID the emphasis has been on what we can deliver on-line and invariably in respect to professional development of educators in health professions.

Moving forward we are considering the two strands to the PD Portfolio, embracing both aspects of scholarship; being an educator and a researcher.  In respect to PD in research, Koshila Kumar and Christy Nobel ran an on-line session exploring applying for research grants.  Moving forward and reflecting on the ANZAHPE members survey, we are thinking of opportunities for researchers to network in order to share research experience.  With an onus on research, we are looking for expressions of interest from a Higher Degree Researcher to join the PD Portfolio team – please see this edition of the Bulletin.

We were grateful to Keryn Bolte for running the first PeArLS on-line this month allowing us the opportunity to consider what works well and well can be improved moving forward.   We have two more PeArLS before the ANZAHPE Festival.

In late 2020 - early 2021, ANZAHPE formally canvassed the views of members and contacts via an online survey. Feedback was gathered regarding the: overall value of ANZAHPE membership, value of key member services; contemporary challenges faced by members, and how the association could better support members. The survey was completed by 37.4% of members, and the report on findings is now available.  Click here to view. We have identified a series of recommendations related to maximising the appeal and value of membership and member services such as the ANZAHPE Online professional development program, the ANZAHPE journal (FoHPE), and the Fellowship scheme.

The ANZAHPE Committee of Management extends its sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the survey and provided feedback, and congratulates the two winners of the survey prize draw Monica Carrarini and Sarmishtha Ghosh.  Both will have complimentary access to the first ANZAHPE ONLINE Master class workshop later in 2021.

If you have any questions or comments about this report, please let us know by emailing executive@anzahpe.org

Update from ANZAHPE President, Ben Canny

It is a great pleasure to pen this message to ANZAHPE in my interim role.  I would like to start by thanking the ANZAHPE membership, and especially the Committee of Management, for the support I have been given over the last several months.  To me, this speaks to the essential fabric of ANZAHPE as a membership-led, collaborative association, committed to the pursuit of excellence.

The Committee of Management has been working hard about how we can better support the membership in their professional and personal development.  Thanks to all members who took the time to contribute to Membership Survey, which has highlighted the importance of networking and career development in research to the ongoing professional success of our members.  ANZAHPE is determined to develop these aspects of its activities, with the ongoing initiative of ANZAHPE ONLINE forming a critical part of this strategy.  The Committee of Management is open to suggestions from the membership about how we can serve you better.

Preparations for the ANZAHPE Festival are continuing apace.  As you are most probably aware, the theme is “Moving Forward in Ambiguity”, and I thank the membership for tolerating the open-ended nature of some of the organisational aspects.  A fully online Conference/Festival is new to ANZAHPE, as it is for our Professional Conference Organiser (PCO – EventStudio (formerly Plevin and Associates)).  As the program has (is) taken(ing) shape, the technical solutions are being finalised and confirmed.  We aim to have the Festival be as “low tech” as possible, recognising that technical complexity can be a significant inhibitor to engagement and interaction.  We had over 290 abstracts submitted, and all but a small number have been accepted and included in the program (formal notification should slightly precede this Bulletin).  We also have 3 Keynote presentations organised, and a handful of workshops, including engagement from AMEE and IAMSE.  We hope to learn much from an online conference, which will inform future conference organisation.  We look forward to your feedback.

Finally, I would like to encourage members to consider their engagement with ANZAHPE.  Your membership keeps us alive, both academically and financially, and ANZAHPE offers great opportunities for further professional development.  This could be in the form of ANZAHPE Fellowship, being involved with the Mentoring scheme the Fellowship committee is developing, or nominating for election to the Committee of Management.  The Association needs its members involved, and I look forward to its ongoing vitality.

    Ben Canny
    ANZAHPE President
