How do I... leverage GenAI to enhance my teaching and learning experiences?

Presenters: Kaley Lyons, Andrew Bartlett and Cory Dal Ponte 

This ANZAHPE masterclass begins with an introduction to the potential of Generative AI (GenAI) in education, showcasing a range of AI-powered tools designed to enhance teaching and learning experiences. Andrew will demonstrate custom-built GenAI bots alongside commercial AI applications, highlighting their role in fostering creative and critical thinking. Participants will then move into interactive breakout rooms to engage directly with these AI tools, experimenting with ways GenAI can act as a critical friend, support debate facilitation, or function as a Socratic tutor. A debrief will follow, allowing attendees to reflect on key insights from the hands-on activity. 

Next, Cory will lead a step-by-step walkthrough on creating a custom GenAI bot, guiding participants through the process of designing their own AI-powered teaching assistant. A public link will be provided so attendees can continue exploring and refining their bots beyond the session. The masterclass will conclude with a brainstorming activity, where participants can contribute ideas, discuss practical considerations for implementing GenAI in their teaching, and ask questions. 

This session is highly interactive, providing an opportunity to learn, experiment, and collaborate while gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge AI tools for education. 

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS: 

A/Prof Kayley Lyons 

Kayley Lyons (PharmD, MS, PhD) is the Course Director for the Master of Public Health Programs at the University of Melbourne. She brings extensive expertise in health education and leadership, previously serving as the Digital Health Education Lead at the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health. A/Prof Lyons holds a Doctor of Pharmacy, a Master of Science in Health-System Administration with coursework at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, and a PhD in Learning Sciences and Psychological Studies. 

Andrew Bartlett 

Andrew Bartlett, BPharm, is a Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice and a PhD Candidate at The University of Sydney Pharmacy School (SPS), Faculty of Medicine and Health. As a pharmacy owner with 30 years experience, he provides leadership in the areas of Pharmacy management within School curriculum. Andrew also serves as the Deputy Coordinator of the national NAPE Intern Training Program, shaping the professional paths of pre-registrant pharmacists across Australia. His PhD research focuses on preceptor competency assessment, and his broader research interests encompass technology in teaching and learning practices, including embedding AI tools into classroom teaching as a way to improve student engagement and understanding. 

Cory Dal Ponte 

Cory Dal Ponte is a PhD student within the Department of Medical Education, his work is focused on assessing and building generative AI literacy and fluency capabilities. Cory also works at the University of Melbourne as a Learning Experience Designer in Organisational Development, where he integrates GenAI into teaching and learning activities, as well as building educator capabilities in AI assisted pedagogy.
